Artists……… via supersimbo.......... October 18th, 2008 at 11:26

image Iv just been reading this interview and a few things have stood out! I'll just throw the quotes at you; "Don’t rely on the church community to sustain your work, get out and engage with the great unwashed.""If it really ain’t working out, walking away to do something else is not a sign of failure.""Work out, through some honest, scrutiny if you what you’re making/doing is actually up to scratch by the respective industry standard. Being a christian and an artist does not mean God has automatically given you a right to be critically acclaimed or internationally recognised, so be prepared to work out if your output needs improvement.""Creative’s shouldn’t be on a church staff though they need to be immersed in their industry and shaping their small sphere of influence through...

Jesus was a democrat…… via supersimbo.......... October 13th, 2008 at 15:22

"Jesus Christ was a left wing radical JewMurdered by people like you" sings Art Alexakis on the new Everclear track. Its free to download at that link by the way. What usually happens right about now is that we slam Art for his tattoo's and occasional swearing but does that detract from the truth in these words? Iv argued this point in relation to Bono on several occasions and i usually come out of those discussions looking like a liberal lunatic and having acquired some more people praying for my salvation. Whilst having a dig at the Republican Party for sure, Everclear's larger blow here is at 'Religion' which is surely the curse of our planet's history. Really, you say? Watch this clip! or perhaps this one! So, whether Jesus was or would be a democrat or not is one of those questions...

Who is Brody Harper? via supersimbo.......... September 9th, 2008 at 09:03

I first discovered Brody when he was on the road with Shaun and cuz we had worked with Shaun in Ireland i reckoned he must be a good guy to be hanging out with Sir Groves. Anyway, he is a super connected and very smart good guy who is going to end up one of the best known and most useful guys in 'Christian' music, he might just change the whole industry for the good, so for me to 'cyber' know him is an immense pleasure. Last week i spun together a new banner for his blog and he has said some very nice words about me. If only he knew im really in prison and its all a lie, ok im kidding about prison!! Anyway, check out what the dude said here. Oh, and if you have stopped by here on Brody's recommendation, please, lets share some link love, now that would be cool, don't you...

Originality….. via supersimbo.......... September 6th, 2008 at 20:51

Ok so some would tell you there is no such thing as an original idea and thats fair enough. I have read a few recent criticisms of the 'christian' music industry that suggest it persistently copies ideas and styles from the so-called 'secular' industry. Whether it is the music or the artwork, its not cool when we see any product that blatantly rips off another. So, what of this kind of thing? Is this smart? Is it 'cutting edge' to wear a t-shirt like this? You are wearing your faith on your sleeve as such, so is that cool? I used to wear a WWJD bracelet, i once subscribed to the thinking behind these products. I just wonder if, to the average person who may see this on your chest, it means anything? Faith Book? A reference to the lambs book of life i assume, and Jesus wants to put you in...

Isn’t it a Pity………….. via supersimbo.......... August 23rd, 2008 at 22:09

image After talking about the whole Mike Guglielmucci debacle today i thought to myself "Isn't it a pity" and yea, perhaps pity is not an appropriate emotion but i couldn't get George's amazing song out of my head all afternoon. The words are typically brilliant and if you don't know the song, please watch the clip. This performance rocks & watch out for Billy's organ solo!from this dvdhttp://www.text-link-ads.com/xml_blogger.php?inventory_key=PH203EOCDRY2ZAL1H02V...

Anointed? via supersimbo.......... August 21st, 2008 at 20:35

image "The word anointed gets thrown around a lot in Christian circles do describe what happens when it seems God has set a person or a thing apart from some greater purpose. Some said this song is anointed or that this man was anointed. Some are now questioning the anointing because they feel betrayed and tricked.I do not believe songs are anointed. Songs are either good or bad. God can and does use songs from all genres penned by all kinds but a song is a song." from this very honest post by jVohttp://www.text-link-ads.com/xml_blogger.php?inventory_key=PH203EOCDRY2ZAL1H02V...

Lord i’m discouraged……… via supersimbo.......... August 20th, 2008 at 22:20

image That is the name of a track on the new Hold Steady album. Great song, but tonight that line is running through my head for all the wrong reasons. In truth, i am discouraged and i probably shouldn't be. In the last week i have been discouraged by two very public 'falls from grace' within 'ministry.' One of them has just came to my attention & is being blogged about a lot right now! I will not go into details, i don't want to judge these two people because it could be me, it could be you. The fact remains that i am discouraged, angry and troubled and if i could open my front door and yell at the sky i might just. The folks across the street might freak!! BUT, despite my anger & discouragement i need to remember grace, read...

Rob Bell : The Gods Aren’t Angry via supersimbo.......... August 19th, 2008 at 21:49

Usually it makes more sense to blog about a book/cd/dvd after investigating said product! Usually is not how i ever do things and as i said to someone just the other day, 'I like to do things arse about face.' This morning the latest Rob Bell dvd came up in conversation and i am keen to get watching it sometime soon. I really enjoyed Everything is Spiritual despite not agreeing with every single thing Rob says in it. If you type the title of either of these dvd's or Rob's name into Google you will get enough search results to make your head spin. The net is rife with equal amounts of praise and criticism directed at Rob but one thing that is hard to deny is his amazing ability as a communicator. That is enough of a reason for me to want to watch this, whether i will agree with...

Tall Skinny Kiwi aka Andrew Jones is the man behind one of the very first blogs i found online. I have been reading him ever since, occasionally commenting but always intrigued. The 6.5in blogger is a constant source of interesting thoughts on 'social enterprise, mission, spirituality, new media and the global emerging culture.' He is without a doubt one of the most important blog voices online. Check him out herehttp://www.text-link-ads.com/xml_blogger.php?inventory_key=PH203EOCDRY2ZAL1H02V...

FUEL08, the aftermath……. via supersimbo.......... August 17th, 2008 at 00:21

We just got home from FUEL08! The whole day was almost ruined by the terrible weather we have had all week. It rained non-stop all day today and early this morning the health & safety people shut down FUEL! Plan B was created as best as it could be and one outdoor venue changed to two indoor venues. The main stage acts all played this evening at Ballymena Leisure Center in a big echo chamber of a room but the sound guys did a great great job with a poor location. When we arrived The Psalm Drummers were playing some pretty neat grooves. The [crave]: boys followed with a storming and deafening set, they rocked! Johnny Parks followed and then ONEHUNDREDHOURS rocked the room big time. Tre and his gang are the real deal, you have to check them out. Starfield closed the evening with a great set...

HOw NOT to pray………… via supersimbo.......... August 14th, 2008 at 17:02

image So, Focus on the Family made a mistake when they decided to put this little ditty together. Ok, they may not be Obama supporters and they are quite within their rights to make that known to the public. This, however, sucks and is not funny at all. Is this how we should be publicly seen to encourage the act of prayer, with immature and stupid requests like this? I have been enjoying this series by Mark Driscoll over the last few weeks, i need to catch up on the series though but as a helper on prayer i would recommend checking them out.http://www.text-link-ads.com/xml_blogger.php?inventory_key=PH203EOCDRY2ZAL1H02V...

How would Jesus Blog………….. via supersimbo.......... August 5th, 2008 at 20:51

image Are all my regular readers Christians? I have been thinking about this today, and it would seem that nearly all the blogs i link to are written by 'christians' GRRR i am cringing now at the thought of how i could be slipping into a little 'christian blogging bubble' without realizing it! The impact of this book may not be helping me to feel good about that but i guess i am trying to just figure out what it means to be able connect with people on the outside of our 'bubble' via my blog as well as in the flesh The need for coffee has afforded me the pleasure of getting to know staff in at least 2 nearby coffee shops. As i sat in one of these today sipping my espresso i suddenly realized this! The idea that we need to expand our friendships and acquaintances beyond people who share the same...

They Like Jesus BUT…………… via supersimbo.......... August 2nd, 2008 at 22:24

This book has been out for over a year and i have meant to pick it up so many times. I guess i have been slightly scared to read another book that may make me want to stop going to Church but today i bought a copy and will brave it! I feel like i need to read the book, i really like Dan, despite not being in complete agreement with every single thing he has put in print. On his web page at the time of the book's release he said this "there is great hope, if we only realize that we have not been too Jesus-like in many situations or realize how we hide in the Christian bubble and get so entrenched in the strange sub-culture that most people don't get to meet us and build trust in us."http://www.text-link-ads.com/xml_blogger.php?inventory_key=PH203EOCDRY2ZAL1H02V...

The Dark Knight……….. via supersimbo.......... July 31st, 2008 at 15:51

We saw this film last friday night here. I have been hesitant to blog about it as it seems everyone is doing so and i am not a great film reviewer at the best of times. I was reading this review just now though and thought i would pick up on a couple of the points they make over at 'Hollywood Jesus.' The Dark Knight is "a very dark, very bleak, very violent film" and they quite rightly ask the question "Why would so many people find that appealing?" Is the Heath Ledger performance and his tragic death enough of a reason for the initial success of the film? The review asks this important question: "This is far from an uplifting film, and especially considering the dark times we're living in ourselves, why would so many people want to repeatedly go and indulge in a film that takes that...

more on Todd Bentley……… via supersimbo.......... July 15th, 2008 at 20:28

So i had something else in mind to blog until i read this post about Todd Bentley. I blogged about him a couple of weeks ago here, where i indirectly called him a "wingnut" and subsequently got told off in an email for doing so. I admit that i have been judgmental about Bentley's 'ministry' and have managed to offend at least a few people with my thoughts on it. The criticisms are rife all over the internet but thats not why i am posting this, i do not want to be one of those guys who likes to keep banging the same negative skeptical fundamentalist drum over and over. Thats what i hope this blog is not! If i thought supersimbo was that kind of place i would hang up my html & pull out the phone line! Anyway, i am grateful for this account and others like it that offer a first hand...

Who is God? via supersimbo.......... July 4th, 2008 at 21:31

image Tall Skinny Kiwi posted a link to this blog a few days ago, i am slow to post it here!! The blog 'about' section says this;Who is God?' was one of the top three sentences googled in 2007, according to Google Zeitgeist. According to Alexa, the top two religious websites are Muslim, with BibleGateway coming in at a close third. The Online Generation is spiritual. They are seeking. And the church is the last place they would go to find spiritual fulfillment. This site is dedicated to those walking with The Online Generation and living lives of obedience to all the commands of Jesus Christ.Important words? Read the rest of their site description here. There is a lot on this site to inspire and even more to think about. Does your Church realize that the internet is HUGE and can be used to...

The Reason For God……. via supersimbo.......... July 3rd, 2008 at 22:17

So this book landed today! Lots and lots has been said about the book and loads of people have been asking me for it since way back in January. Until recently i had not heard of Keller or his ministry in Manhattan. As well as being asked for his book i also heard Mark Driscoll mention him a few times, and not in a sarcastic manner!!  You can find a great list of Resources on the guy here. So whats going on with the guy and his book and his Church? I like this description of Redeemer Church that appeared in Newsweek: "There's nothing sexy here. There's no rock band, no drop-down theater-size video screen, no 100-member gospel choir—just a few chamber musicians and a couple of prayer leaders to help the congregation along in its hymns. The crowd at Redeemer Presbyterian is...

Pizza & ‘Prophets’………… via supersimbo.......... July 2nd, 2008 at 10:10

image Last night we had us some Pizza with some friends and the banter was great. The conversation was, as usual, wide and varied but YES we got to talking about Todd Bentley. What usually happens is, someone thinks i have some better knowledge of these things due to my job at a Christian Bookshop. This is rarely always the case but with tattoo'd Todd i have an opinion and pushed to give it to a table with a mixture of Pentecostal, Presbyterian and Baptist's i decided i knew everyone well enough to say what i thought. As the words "i think he is a wingnut, perhaps a false prophet and this is very dangerous stuff" left my mouth i knew what might happen but amazingly we entered a very balanced discussion on the issue. Several of the group agreed with me, some were less skeptical but we didn't...

Jesus wants to save Christians….. via supersimbo.......... June 25th, 2008 at 12:59

I am not sure if you agree with Rob Bell on everything but thats not the point of this post. The point of this post is to say that i think his products are the best looking stuff the 'christian' market has seen over the last few years. The Nooma dvd's are packaged brilliantly, as was his first 2 books and the Everything is Spiritual dvd. I have to applaud the guys who come up with this stuff, they rock. I know, you may want to say that we should never judge a book by its cover, and that is quite correct but i am JUST talking about packaging here! I should add i do like the synopsis for the new book (pictured). It says: "There is a church not too far from us that recently added a $25 million addition to their building. Our local newspaper ran a front-page story not too long ago about a...

God & The Rolling Stones….. via supersimbo.......... June 24th, 2008 at 22:14

image I love this song, i love that Mick & Keith wrote a song about various people in history who had converted to Christianity, notably St. Paul and St. Augustine. Mick sings that he will never be a saint but he also sings that he believes in miracles and he wants to save his soul, i wonder does he mean this or is it just lyrical word play?I wonder sometimes when we are a fan of someone in the public spotlight do we take time to stop and pray for them? It is crazy that we can write off a film star or musician due to their excessive lifestyle or at least some part of their life we do not agree with. We sit in judgement and never stop to pray that God would touch their life. I wonder who is praying for Mick & the boys? Who are you praying...

The Shack…. via supersimbo.......... June 17th, 2008 at 21:45

"This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress” did for his. It’s that good!” Eugene Peterson said that about this book, i like Peterson, i like his books and yes i kind of like The Message but on this occasion i think he is wrong. One thing i should state is that i do not read "Christian fiction," ever! This is "theological fiction" though so I have made an exception for the book that is causing quite a stir and has caused many "high profile" people to applaud it. I am aware that God is portrayed as an African-American woman in the story. Jesus is a young to middle-aged man of Middle-Eastern descent with a big nose and rather plain looks while the Holy Spirit is played by Sarayu, a small, delicate and eclectic woman of Asian...

Driscoll & Doctrine……… via supersimbo.......... May 26th, 2008 at 22:58

Doctrine is a word that scares a lot of "Christians" and i have to say there have been times when i have heard it and switched off. When Mark Driscoll (left) started a sermon series on Doctrine he received several phone calls from pastors who lead large flocks asking if anyone is still coming out to listen. "The rule is, if you have a big church you're supposed to not talk about certain things that are controversial [or] divisive," Driscoll is 8 weeks into the 13 week series and so far i have been really hooked in on this one. In the past i have dipped in and out of his sermon series without ever taking in a full set. The entire "Doctrine" sermon series at Mars Hill will be published as part of a book series and small group curriculum will also be developed to accompany the book to help...

“Aren’t I something! Look at me!” via supersimbo.......... May 16th, 2008 at 13:08

image "we (and I include myself in all of these things) must avoid a triumphalistic attitude. It is good to gather in the name of the Lord Jesus and to give him praise, but as fallen creatures who are imperfectly sanctified it is so easy for our praise of Jesus to morph into praise for our group and then for us to feel superior to others who do not see what we see."This is a snippet from this article that is well worth a read. The Title "young, restless & reformed" caught my eye even though i struggle with "reformed" as a definition/term for what we are or more importantly, what i am. I guess restless is the word in that phrase that is closest to what i am!! H/T Simonhttp://www.text-link-ads.com/xml_blogger.php?inventory_key=PH203EOCDRY2ZAL1H02V...

Death of an Alpha Leader……… via supersimbo.......... May 11th, 2008 at 09:32

image Last week i got a mention on Hugh Hewitts's blog! In the wake of that and in connection with the ongoing discussion about The Evangelical Manifesto, Randy Elrod wrote a guest post on Hugh's blog. You can read it all here . I have just downloaded the Manifesto and haven't quite read it fully yet but my initial reaction on all of this is to agree with Randy, for the most art anyway. I love this quote: "Alpha leaders value control, servant leaders value collaboration. Alpha leaders value individualism, servant leaders value community. Alpha leaders value affluence, servant leaders value influence." There is a lot of discussion around the manifesto right now, as someone rightly pointed out though, the input of Randy and Hugh seemed to be more about the form of the document and not its...

New Banner & Todd Bentley…………. via supersimbo.......... May 6th, 2008 at 16:10

image I will keep changing my banner every other day if i do not stop myself! It happens when "we" take photo's, i look at them and think "oh there is a banner in that one." So, i have decided that the one that just appeared will be my summer banner. I placed the words "SUMMER 08" on it to remind me! I mean, you would think i had nothing to do really!! I was listening to MUTEMATH and had been reading their album sleeve notes when i started this banner, can you tell? Anyway, i had my blog break for various reasons. It is good to switch off sometimes, from email, blog and such "addictions." I came back into the "interweb world" yesterday and as i floated around twitter & facebook i came across a group invite on the latter. It was for "The florida healing revival" group, so obviously not being in...
